What Billy said, but remember if gauge is different you may have to adjust at the nylon hex to have pedal in tune.

If You play like Me You don't have to be in tune
Did You spot the deliberate mistake? An 11 gauge string is 0.011 and not 0.11.(that may be the reason I am out of tune!!)

My 11guage electric strings broke when i got them up to G#. I wound them two keys distance x 2, so 4 keys distance. Any suggestions?

If you have 10 or 12 try those, 11s can be a problem .

Where are the strings breaking Charlie,at the changer end or the keyhead ?

Sometimes a small burr can cause this,I had similar problems many years ago and after looking at the hole in the peg at the keyhead with the aid of a magnifying glass I saw a couple of grooves which I managed to smooth out with fine grit sand paper.
You are installing the strings the correct way.You could also check the roller at the nut to ensure it revolves freely, and sometimes a small spot of oil on the top of the changer (beneath the string) will help.

I find that standard guitar 0.011's are not ideal to take up to G# - A. Nothing to do with the make of guitar, just a fact sadly. Strings designed specifically for the rigours of pedal steel are made from a slightly different type of steel that can tolerate the changing tensions.

Charlie, get a couple of sets of SIT E9's from John Davis. Not the best available but they come with a couple of 0.011's. One thing I say to all players who experience string breakage is the obvious thing of making sure you are tuning to concert pitch.

Charlie, I don't think anyone has mentioned that when you are winding the string onto the capstan at the peghead, make sure you don't anvil the string. in other words do not wind the string over itself, and while I am on the subject try to keep the pulls as straight as possible when it goes over the roller

Hey all, my "SIT - Stay In Tune - Buddy Emmons Signature Series" strings arrived today! With an extra 11! (I think Banjo + Guitar strings should come with an extra high string too!)

So before I get going, could anyone explain how to string this thing properly to achieve the perfect winding.

I'm replacing the 3rd string, so as this is highest, am i right in saying it should be given twice the amount of length as the rest of the strings??? ie. two tuning keys distance x 2 ?

Thanks !

Perfect, Thanks Allan!

Hoorah! I am back up and running.

I managed to stab myself with the strings already on the guitar in the process too! Haha
