Rickenbacker bakelite - 2 questions

Postby R Hay » Wed Jan 29, 2014 1:18 pm

Hi Folks,

Greetings to the few on here who know me!!!

For anyone who may know Rickenbacker bakelite steels....read on:

I'm really hung up on Jerry Byrd.
I've got a 30's Bakelite lap steel (6 stringer) with the chrome inserts that I play quite a bit- it's got the 1/2" pickup so I'm guessing it's pre-ww2.
I don't think the pots are original...but it's got "that" sound I love.....

I'm not too savvy when it comes to electronics but can use a soldering iron:

I've read somewhere Jerry had a 100k pot in his steel.
If so, I'd like to go that way on my Rick'.
I've read folks have put in 1meg pots and say how amazed they are but I'm not sure if these people are aiming for the same sound.
All I play is old time country & swing so I'm not interested in making it sound like some distorted blues/metal honker.
This is a steel for me to play, not look at so I'm not too bothered about changing anything re: sacrilegious tinkering but I'd love to get that sweep that Jerry got on his steel on the "boo-wah"..... maybe I have already & it's just down to how the tracks were laid down in the studio back in the day....

Questions:
1- Is there anything to gain by changing the pot to 100k... so I can make more of the "boo-wah" sound?
2- Any recommendations as to what pots to buy & where to get them?

3- I could do with another tone/ vol knob in the Rick style (if someone has any for sale please let me know but it's not too big a deal for me!).

I could really do with a bit of advice re: tone pot & vol (tone info more important, though!!!).
My thanks & in advance of any replies,
Cheers

Hi Folks,
After the deluge of replies I just did a search on the Steel Guitar Forum & there's a whole bunch of info there.
If anyone's interested...here's a good one about it:
