What would anyone recommend as indispensable steel guitar listening?

Most of Ray Price stuff has some of the best steel playing you will ever hear, Justin Trevino. If you want to learn to to back up a singer the old
time steel players are the best.

Henry, Johns above advice is smack on the meter.
The simplicity and excellence of Jimmy Days playing got me enthused years ago, used his licks to death and still do.

i've got an instrumental album of Jimmy Day's called All Those Years.
Every track is a killer. I'd love to get some of those lick down..

are there any albums to recommend? I am going to Australia at the end of the month and have 40 hours of plane to site through so I thought I'd stock up the ipod

Do'nt apologise for being a newbie,We are all newbies in one way or another.
I make no apologies for being a John Hughey fan,His tone and delivery are what puts the chills up My spine.
There are loads of great steel players and recordings,Why not save Your pennies and come to Dallas next march and meet them all.
I have been there for the past six years and plan on going again next Year.
