Some may get close but there will never be another Hag. He always had soul and emotion in his voice. I enjoyed his voice most when he was in his 30's, when his vocal range was at its best. His songs meant something to all of us who appreciated him.

Very poignant song and performance. I had the same feeling when I heard Ralph Stanley singing Oh Death and Johnny Cash's version of Hurt. The artist's life brings another layer meaning to the song. Beautiful. Thanks Bob.

Here is Merle at his peak. His range was as good as Glen Campbell's, but with more soul. One poster on this YT clip refused to believe that it was Merle singing, But it certainly was. I watched this film at the weekend and Merle's voice just knocked me out.

Truly great chanter. Although, and it must be because I'm getting older, I love his latter recordings (especially the very rough and ready bluegrass album he recorded fairly recently, over a weekend!!!) for their frailty and the lived in experience he brings to the songs. Sadly missed.
