Cheers Bob... Thanks for the kind comments chaps. I was just messing with this on Saturday trying to figure out what Lloyd and Mike had played and trying some different EQ settings on the TCA-500... One of David's Youtube's had Mike Johnson's awesome version on it and Bob pointed us towards Nic's site for the backing a few months ago.... And thinking back to a steel guitar meeting a while ago I think I recall Derek playing it...
For Telonics owners... the EQ setting I used is a little out of the norm. By turning up the Bass and Treble levels and keeping the Mid level initially at zero you create the typical scooped sound. This allows you to use the parametric mid in a more subtle way to tweak your mids at just the right point. I was comparing my sound with Mike's sound in the clip below... this EQ setting gets you quite close to Mike's sound. Of course the tone of his awesome PP comes through, and terrific playing adds greatly to his overall sound, but the general tone is close. After I recorded this I actually pulled out a little 700Hz, just 2 or 3 dB and used that setting Sunday night... Despite the strings being really shot the sound felt good.
I've just listened to Dale Rottacker's version... Great job.
And Dale Rivard's version... Very nice.
Listening to the Dale's I twigged, around the second bar of the intro I should have moved to the 15th fret with the E's to F raised.

Interesting info regards tone settings, I don't have a Telonics but I've been messing about with my tones and ended up doing something similar to you re the scooped setting. Bass & top set high and then using a couple of parametrics to tweak the mids down. I ended up cutting around 800hz and 1.6Khz, still experimenting with this setting but it seems to work well with my Carter U12.

Interesting comments on your settings Mark.
I like to boost the bass, take out some 700hz mids and not have the highs too heavy. I spent a load of time discussing tone with Mike Johnson last year. He goes to extraordinary lengths to get the richest tone that he can. He uses a passive volume pedal, and although he uses an old Peavey LTD on gigs, he has fitted a EPS-15C - Eminence Speaker in it. I told him about the Telonics TCA500, and he said that he had heard some good things about it. Incidentally, Mike uses the TCE G-Force in his rig, and loves it.
To my mind, the TCA500 is everything and more that any steel player would want, except dirt. It is an exceptionally clean sounding amp, and coupled with a Telonics Neo speaker is awesome in its efficiency. I saw Johnny Cox and Steve Palousek both get some incredible tones out of the TCA last March, and while they are great players, they are both tone hounds. Steve in particular will spend hours getting just the right sound that he likes.

Ken - Re. the EQ I didn't really explain myself that well... If you have five minutes try this: Set the Blend to 0 - Set the Mid level to 0 (about 3 o'clock) so no frequencies are boosted. Now turn both the Bass and Treble initially to +8dB. So the higher than normal Bass and Treble settings are effectively creating the scooped middle. At this stage only adjust the Bass and Treble to achieve the tone you want. Play the guitar for several minutes to give your ears a chance to adjust to the different sound. Now set the Mid Level to about -2.5dB and sweep the Mid Frequency between 400 - 800Hz to just take out the remaining mid honky sound. This is a different way of using the the Mid controls, the traditional way being to set the Mid Level to -10dB to give you the mid scoop and adjust the Bass and Treble levels to finalize the EQ.
This should work with the PRE-200 and PRE-1000 preamplifiers as well, they have the same tone section. You may not get the same effect using other equipment because the slope of the EQ controls and Q of the parametric mid will be different to the Telonics equipment. But, you never know, it might work.
Yes, Mike does use the G-Force. The T C Electronics engineers told me the G-Major 2 uses very similar algorithms to the G-Force... The G-Major has the advantage of volt-free contacts so the T-Bro/Onboard Reverb effects can be switched by selecting patches... very cool when used with Handy Patch - It's great to have the reverb change to suit the Dobro effect. The G-Force has a superior ability to order effects; sadly the G-Force is no longer available new. I'd like to pick up a secondhand G-Force myself to develop some presets and compare them.
