Steve,
You're a young player, still learning (aren't we all?) and I feel that you are at a point where you may get into 'bad habits' which are best ironed out early on in a players life.

Now, I'm no paragon of virtue when it comes to PSG, indeed, I've never had my bad habits ironed out, because I was self-taught back in the dark ages (pre-internet), but I have a couple of pointers for you:

Sit more to the changer end of the steel, centre yourself around about the 17th fret.

Don't let your picking arm stick out so far, tuck it in a bit to get a better picking angle/tone (this is one of my bad habits that I wish someone had told me about early on).

Practice blocking, especially pick-blocking.

Learn how to tune the cabinet-drop out of your steel (I've got a thread on the US forum which I'll dig out if you're interested)

Watch my right hand in this video for an example of pick (and possibly palm) blocking
