Weldon Tribute

Finally got round to adding a tribute to Weldon Myrick on “70’s stuff”. It’s an up tempo version of his, Corn Crib from The Po’ Boys 60’s instrumental L.P.

The recording isn’t good quality as it was only a radio cassette set in front of the stage. It suffers from acute Cymbalism… however it’s listenable

The rest of the songs, with plenty of mistakes, are all from the 70’s as well. A couple, recorded on someone’s reel to reel at a practice haven’t stood the test of time quality wise.

The second song “Which Way Is Gone” has a glaring mistake (among others) at the end of the Steel solo. I’m going to post some rules about this shortly under “Tuition”. Some may know, most won’t, but I guarantee it will be very helpful to you.

Fifth song is just the solo, as Cymbalism takes over in most of the song.

Keep your eyes on the “Tuition” section.

As I told you once before when we were discussing another steel player - you can swing. This is a quality that not all players have. You should be playing on steel guitar shows. You and Robert Haskell Esq are both top quality players.

Just to say I'm not in it for ego - I just like playing. I'm really just a frustrated boogie woogie man at heart.

Ken, I'll pass on your remarks on to my granddad Bob Haskell. It's marvellous how you can play a steel and hold a Zimmer frame at the same time......

Just trying to write something for the Tuition section at the moment. It's getting a bit long winded but very easy to understand - stick with it.

Your tracks are very inspiring, and I would imagine that you played them on your Emmons? I'll put some tracks out under pedal steel recordings that I did with some friends, and that I used my Emmons push pull on. The Emmons push pull guitars just sit so well in any mix.

For those of you who don't know Tony, he is an Essex man and along with his partner in comedy - Bobby Haskell - are two of Britain's finest. Both very modest guys who let everyone else blow their own trumpets, as they are not into that in the least. Tony is an engineer, and knows a lot about steel guitar mechanics. He made me a great little device for holding the string in place when changing strings on a push pull. I use it religiously every time.

Re. your comments Ken, yes they were on my 1974 Emmons pp. - 9 pedals and eventually 7 knees. Was originally 10 pedals and 4 knees.

I was lucky enough in the early 70's to play with an Anglo-American band (songs 3&4) based at Lakenheath U.S. airbase.
Through them I got a twin with JBL's cheap,which I used until I got one of the first 500's.

It was a fantastic band, real country and we were all of a like mind. We all liked the same sort of stuff- Ray Price, George and Tammy, Connie Smith, Western Swing etc. There was so much good music around then. Dick the bass player/singer and Christine the English girl singer, blended together perfectly. I still consider myself one of the luckiest steel players here to have had such an opportunity. I must admit though they wouldn't let me do my favourite song, - the George Formby classic, (Does Your Banjo Go All Soggy) When You're Cleaning Windows.........

Luckily I can say what I like about Granddad Haskell as he is on holiday at the moment. He's promised to bring me back a present, but do I really want an anti personnel mine ???????
