I've heard it said so many times... it doesn't matter what gear you have it's your ability and technique that creates a good sound. Well, that may or may not be true, but occasionally a product comes along that benefits players of all abilities and really is a game changer.

I've been playing around with a set of Dave Beaty's new 84's pickups, on both necks... I have to say, as a home recordist I've frequently struggled to get a good recorded sound, especially straight out of a preamp. Well, what can I say... the sound you hear is straight out of the back of the PRE1000, no added EQ... And look at the tone controls!


Dave's team are working on the fine detail of getting them into production at the moment, they'll hopefully be in full production shortly.

Mark, fantastic, great choice of tune,you can't beat ole Hag, playing superb. like the pickups as well.

The sound is too sterile for me, but that could be caused by all the gadgetry that the steel is plugged in to.

Would it be possible to completely bypass all the gadgets (including the volume pedal), and plug your steel directly into your computer, so that the dry signal from the pickup can be easier to discern/evaluate, or would a pre-amp be needed to boost the signal?

Me and you both know how fantastic the Telonics equipment is, and that Dave Beaty is producing high end steel guitar equipment.
There is simply nothing better than the amp, PreAmp or volume pedals out there in my opinion.

Now, Richard Burton is absolutely correct.

You have demonstrated a pickup, but with all the other outboard equipment in line.
I would also like to hear a few seconds of your steel, straight into the recorder.

This is exactly how I record, steel to recorder, via a volume pedal only.
The volume pedal alters my sound by nothing, it just gives me control.

I would like to add, I have been playing my shobud at gigs recently, with your Steel Mixer, through the Telonics rack and evans speakers and it is, without doubt, the finest sound I have ever had. For this reason, the Rains stays next to the iMac for the sessions/home recordings, and the shobud is the gig/rehearsal guitar.

I am obviously following the Telonics pickup threads and demos closely. My shobud still has a tiny tiny tiny bit of pedal clatter being picked up via the pickup. Most people wouldn't hear it, but I still can. If I can eliminate this, I would be well happy.

I love telonics equipment and have become a friend of Dave Beaty's over the past few years.
I will attest to the fact that Dave has a genuine desire to help the steel guitar fraternity ,His dedication to present us with outstanding equipment is second to none,.he is a Gentleman in every sense of the word.
Research and development at Telonics has been extensive and expensive.Dave is very genuine in His efforts to improve our playing by providing this wonderful equipment.
With all due respect I have to say that soundclips on a computer do not do the pickups justice,bearing in mind that We are litening(in most cases)thru a couple of 1 or 2 inch speakers).Your playing on the demo is superb as always and does show the string separation of these pickups very well.I own two of these p/u's and am just settling down with the new type 84 and I can say that they are the best I have had.

I agree Billy, Dave is a very genuine guy and dedicated to helping steel players. All I've done is kick the ball off to make people aware of this product.

I must admit the more I use these pickups the more I like them. The sound they produce is just so well balanced. I understand Richard's and David's comments, they are great players and give considered advice. But what I would say, it doesn't seem to matter if I'm playing at a gig, or recording out of the preamp, the sound is sweet and makes you want to play, before you even start to EQ it.

There's no question in my mind, they are the best pickup for steel guitar I've tried.
