Some for Danny Mitchell. Hold on to your hat!

Postby Ken Byng » Fri Oct 02, 2020 4:54 pm

Hi Danny. You were impressed with Mike Johnson cutting loose on a previous clip that I posted. I have this track on one of Mike's albums.

Alabama Jubilee is Buck Reid's party piece on his steel festival performances. However, I think that Mike does a pretty good job on this track too. He plays a tremendous diminished run partway through, so it's worth keeping an ear open for that.

My favourite ballad of Mike's.
One that he composed himself and dedicated to his wife. It's called Joan Marie. Loads of what I call Mike'isms in there.

The next clip on here is the late, and great Daryle Singletary featuring Mikey J on I Never Go Around Mirrors.

Just listen to Mike's superlative tone, and unusual chord change in his solo. Brilliant.

I'm on a roll now. Here's some very smooth C6 playing from Mike on Columbus Stockade Blues. He's got to be one of the best all round steel players on the planet today.

The last clip is the old Merle Haggard tune - Workin' Man Blues.

Some really nice moves.

Always said you had exquisite taste Willie. How can anyone not like Mike Johnson's playing. It all top drawer stuff.
