Explorations in C Video

Postby Gary James Peters » Mon Jun 29, 2020 1:13 pm

Hi All

I've been tweaking the mic settings on my camera (I didn't know you could do that), which has, I think, improved the sound quality of my videos, now I just need to tweak my playing. In the meantime, here's a little improv in C, which, as always, gets going as it gets going.

I've also added some jazz to my Soundcloud page...must be an age thing.

Those jazzier tracks somehow reminded me of that purple patch my auntie Joni hit, when she was using Larry Carlton, Pat Metheny, Jaco Pastorious and the Crusaders as her backing band. Sort of tone poem-y.
Nice.

A love a good tone poem. And for many years I idolized Larry Carlton (in Crusaders setting). Nicest guitar I ever had (for that kind of thing) was a beautiful sunburst Gibson ES 335 (early 60's). Why do we sell these things? I also had a 1959 Strat which I sold in 1970 for 50 quid. Would be worth well over 10k now!!

That said, the second of the jazzy things is influenced by a lovely old album I have called something like 'Two Jims and Zoot', the 2 Jims being Jim Hall and (in my view the even greater jazz guitarist) Jimmy Raney...my hero (one of).

Thanks for listening Danny (as always)

Aye, back then, when I was young and dumb, I wanted to be Larry Carlton, but obviously not enough to put in the hours required.
Those two guitars of yours would, indeed, be much sought after these days.
I'm not familiar with Jimmy Raney (need to correct that, tout suite). I love Jim Hall, especially on The Bridge and the Jimmy Guiffre 3 stuff.

Gary.
Thank you for posting your Explorations in C video.
Cool, understated and intriguing. Loved it.

Talking of our Jazz Heroes, for me it was Jimmy Raney and Tal Farlow.
I also, could not be bothered to put in the practice time, so became a drummer instead!

Yes...I have the original mono vinyl of 'Move' with Red Norvo, Tal Farlow and Mingus on Bass.. (must be worth a few bob now) guitar playing is out of this world, and the interplay even more so. BUT, very late Farlow I find sad and won't watch or listen to it, he simply lost his touch. Raney on the other hand just got better and better, even when somewhat inebriated as he seems to be in a few late interviews/demos...bless him!

Thanks for listening John
