I don't think that anyone could honestly call Paul's playing as boring. He just has so much knowledge at his disposal that sometimes he just gets lost in the instrument rather than the song.

Here is an example of some playing that although is technically great, has a lot of heart and soul in it too (especially from 1.48).

It's just packed full of surprises, I love that ascending line he does that starts low and goes right up to, as Willie Gamble calls it, the stoorie bit Thanks Ken.

I'm going to listen to the Mike Johnson video but wanted to add my 2p worth re Paul Franklin - albeit from someone who can barely get to the end of any tune I start, so what do I know, but
Boring apart from the bit that others have highlighted;
an absolutely amazing knowledge of the fretboard and a musical vocabulary that most would give any one of the appendages not needed for playing pedal steel;
too loud for the song, too busy for the sentiment being expressed;
no 'blues' (it is in the sentiment of the song, after all)
and, ultimately...

So what? This is the most expressive of instruments. Some expression would have enhanced this song, and that's the name of the game.

I have some embroidery to attend to, so will cast off before I drop a stitch.
