That's the epitome of steel guitar tone that I don't like. Some Mullen G2 guitars sound pretty good, while others have absolutely no body or lower mids in the timbre whatsoever. It's the luck of the draw I guess. I spoke to Del Mullen at the Dallas show nearly 2 years ago, and he said that Mullen had cracked the elusive Emmons push pull sound from an all-pull conundrum with the G2. I think not. The tone of the G2 on the Gene Watson clip sounds extremely metallic, and not sweet like Mikey Johnson's red push pull when he plays with GW.

Little wonder that Buck Reid sent his G2 back to Mullen and is back playing his JCH.

That's thin alright, but how can we tell just by listening to the video that it is the guitar that's at "fault"? Could be the pickup, what the guy is playing through,no? I think it sounds crisp, but too thin, agree on that. You guys are so much more experienced than me, so maybe there is something that tells you IT IS in fact the guitar?

I have a Mullen Discovery which I have understood many things is very similar to the G2 in sound and feel, mine is not thin sounding at all. Could be that I was lucky and drew a good one.

Don't want to start a stooshie but I loved that sound, it was clear, crisp and sweet, and very well played, anyone know who the steelie was?
We all have different sets of lugs, I think this, you think that, we're all right in the end. If everyone had the same tone we would have nothing to discuss and it would be very boring. Donny.

Exactly my point Ken, so then it isn't the guitar but what he is playing through but on a serious note, just because the recording sounds great (Gene's voice is great) doesn't mean the steel players amp couldn't be what makes him thin. Or is he not using an amp you think?

I too Donny like the crispness, but could do with a bit broader spectrum though, it is a thin line between crips and thin.

I don't like to criticize anyone or anything but I agree Ken. I'm really not keen on that sound. I've seen a lot of people bigging up models of guitars such as this, and writing other ones off unfairly. Nice playing though, just the sound that I don't like.

For my money Gene Watson was and is one of the greatest country singers ever. His voice hasn't deteriorated one bit with age.

Donny - I agree 100% that it would be boring if we all had the same tone. I love the tone produced by Mike Johnson, Tommy White and Steve Palousek. Big and full bodied, especially on the lower strings. Too much treble offends my ears, but they are old now and not as acute as they were. Tom Brumley's tone changed as he got older, and he had a mellower and less bright tone as he got older. Even through his Mullen.
