21st Century Schizoid Man

Mon Nov 09, 2020 8:41 pm

Hi All

Listening to our young guns posting up new (actually old) stuff inspired me to get my head down and do the same (but different). Keen to keep up with the young 'uns and their devotion to the country tradition, I decided to once again go back and revisit an old country favourite of mine 'Country Roads'. That was the day before yesterday, but then yesterday my usual schizoid personality led me into something less countryfied. Like my children, I love them both equally, but (like my children) they are very different from each other. Anyway, here they are...enjoy! Be interesting to see which gets the most plays ('most' being a relative term when it comes to my music of course). The second piece is intended to demonstrate the steel in an accompanying role (to my 6 string)...although there is a little solo excursion at the fade.

Thanks for listening

Gary

Thanks Steven

You're an exceedingly good chap!

Does that mean you thought my singing was great too?

Thought not.

Much better than my singing.

Nice playing Gary! Drive has a great groove to it!

Thanks Zak. I was actually driving my car when I recorded it (just an experiment). I liked the result too, so might try that again. That's one advantage of the U12 over the D10, you can play it in the front of your car and still reach the pedals (I mean accelerator, clutch...etc.)

PS: the pedal steel guitar is an exceptionally groovy instrument...right? Just need to get the message out there.

Haha well try driving and recording on the pothole ridden Yorkshire roads next time and you'll end up with a really experimental rhythm! :?

It is a groovy instrument! and I could see myself converting to a universal steel one day too, when I've learnt a lot more.

Actually, I was a Professor of Philosophy in York for 10 years, so that's where it all came from....many pedal steel driving experiences back in the day. Not so easy down here in the South West, but I try.

Weather permitting, I'm going to attempt a cyclo/steel expedition tomorrow...will report back if the results are positive.

In the meantime....

Ah ha! The links are sorted, good stuff.

IMHO, that's a really great interpretation of Country Roads, Gary. Much as I liked John Denver's strident, thigh-slappin' original, I reckon your version highlights a 'late stage' awareness in the lyrics, that could only be voiced by persons of a certain vintage. All the instruments complement the lyric, and that for me is the best of all possible worlds. Michty Braw :guitar:
