Sneaky Pete's best?

Postby saddletramp » Tue Aug 11, 2026 9:13 am

My current project is to play steel on some non-country songs and I have been inspired by Sneaky Pete's session work outside the Flying Burrito Brothers. Specifically, this song by The Golden Palaminos. It has one of the highest 'most played' counts in my music library. I love it. Can anyone recommend other Sneaky Pete gems?

There is a long list of his contributions to others' albums on his Wikipedia page but it doesn't identify single tunes. Another favourite is his playing on Sandy Denny's It'll Take A Long Time, but if you have other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

This one's a bit on the Bizarre side, but we'll worth a listen. It's one of my favourite pieces of Pedal Steel. If the start is a bit crazy for you, the pedal steel solo start around 1:45 minutes.

Frank Zappa - It might just be a one shot deal.

Many thanks for that Geoff. It's an interesting contribution to that era of Zappa's music. I was (am?) a big fan of Zappa and was lucky enough to catch him a couple of times in London. I found the later lyrics off-putting, but the music was still good.

Yeah same. Actually my 2 favourite albums are Waka Jawaka and The Grand Wazoo, there's just something about them that does it for me. Never got the opportunity to see him live unfortunately, not too many bands of that stature tend to wander up here into the wilderness.

Did see Beefheart though at the Bickershaw Festival. Iincredible list of bands who played there, pity it was a mud bath. But the music was great.
