Influences

Apologies if this is replicated elsewhere and I will happily be removed to the depths of the archives if so!

I’m fairly new on my steel journey and I’m looking for some recommended listening. I’d be interested to hear who has influenced your playing and whether you have any favourite albums or examples of their playing!

For me, I’ve really been enjoying the new Orville Peck album (Bronco) with Luke Schneider on steel - particularly ‘City of Gold’ + ‘All I Can Say’.

Hi Robbie, here is my tuppence worth, anything containing any of the following steel guitarists ( in no particular order )
Lloyd Green, Buddy Emmons, Tommy White, Buddy Charlton, Curley Chalker, Mike Johnson, Buck Reid, Doug Jernigan, Hal Rugg, Herby Wallace.
I could literally go on all day, but I think that is enough for now.
what got me interested in steel guitar was Dan Dugmore's solo on Linda Ronstadt's version of the old Roy Orbison classic Blue Bayou ( the 70's version) when I heard that, that was the day I sold my soul to Satan, and I knew I that day I had to " git me one of them thar thangs ". that was back in 1977/78 and it has been a very interesting journey so far.
The wealth of instructional material available on YouTube today is unbelievable Robbie, and if you are in any way interested in learning, it's all there ma boy.
When all of us old codgers on this forum started our journey on steel. it was nothing short of a Black Art, if you wanted to see, or hear another steel guitarist it usually involved a helluva lot of travel, and TV appearances were as rare as hens teeth.
Good luck Robbie, I hope you will enjoy your steel guitar as much as I do, and you will find an endless supply of help and information on this wonderful forum.
We are all in it for the same reason really, and that is to promote this wonderful instrument of ours.

Welcome Robbie,
I'd second everything that John and Willie have said, and would add Russ Pahl, for a more leftfield approach and Kayton Roberts, not a pedal player, but his attitude and technique are fearless.
For youtube tuition, there's Mickey Adams and Joe Wright, both have got lots of free lessons on there.

Hi Robbie, whereabouts do you live? Look out for steel guitar meetings; there's a regular one in the Glasgow area (run by Donny Johnston - great guy!) and one in North Yorkshire, plus a free Festival there too. Look in the "Steel Guitar events meetings and festivals" threads.
The North of England Steel Guitar Festival is on 13 - 14th August (North Yorkshire).

Many of the names mentioned here have been big influences to me.

To add on to that... Tom Brumley, John Hughey and my dad, Steven Hicken Sr, have been my fundamental influences.

Some other rarely mentioned players such as Hank Devito, Larry Sasser and our very own Gerry Hogan also come into influences. It really opens a wormhole. There's just too many names. People like Tommy Detamore then start coming into it as I've heard him on a couple of British sessions recently as well as his great work on the Jesse Daniel albums.

Younger players? Eddy Dunlap, Tyler Hall, Caleb Melo, and my mate Brad on the wrong side of the Pennines ... the list goes on. Hundreds that have my upmost respect and I think you can find tid bits from players of all levels.
