First gig for over 2 years, first solo steel gig ever!

Postby Gary James Peters » Mon Mar 07, 2022 5:56 pm

For those of you unlucky enough not to make it to my solo gig last night in Bath, here's a snippet of what went down. Excuse the sound (blame my camera), in reality, the sound was pretty awesome! Average age of audience: 24. Now that's what I'm talking about! And they were totally enthralled by the good 'ole PSG! So there. Actually, I play 6-string for the first half, but don't let that put you off. And anyway, there's plenty of PSG in the backing track I constructed.

Nice Gary, How many punters were there ? Were you on your own ? or were there other acts there? I thought your sound was really good, the steel was nice and mellow. Regards Donny.

Hi Donny

About 400 were there.

OK, I lied: I think about 400 came to the whole 3-day event, but for me, Sunday afternoon, (when all the young 'uns had hangovers) I got about 25, who sat (rather than danced) and were totally enthralled by the steel... I don't think any of them had even seen one before. They asked lots of questions about it as I was packing up, it was really sweet. The serious issue here is that steel players (younger than me and you) need to be engaging with these people, but I don't see it happening. I'm trying, but then I'm trying in every sense, so I'll shut up.

I hope you're well and holding up OK.

Gary

Really nice Gary! Hopefully I’ll catch the Scottish leg of the tour!
I wouldn’t worry about your serious point - one day a messaiah will come along and show us bus pass folks how its done…. happens to all the ‘oddball’ instruments eventually! I remember the bad old days before the panpipe properly took off!
Cheers
