Good Year For the Roses

Tue Jul 12, 2016 10:50 am

Hi Folks,

Here's my first pedal steel recording! I bought a Bennet 3x3 from John last autumn and I've been struggling away ever since. Tips always welcome (as in ways to improve, not money, although I wouldn't say no.) It's a bit wobbly but you should have heard it last week!

Hi Peter,
I thought that was good, you are definitely "struggling away" in the right direction :guitar:
One wee thought....when the vocals are center stage, perhaps lay out or, at least, lay back a bit. Should you get to Nashville, I believe you might get fined for cutting the singer's grass
Thanks for posting :guitar:

I agree with the comments as posted. Good sound, some (minor) intonation problems, but overall pretty good. A steel player needs to 'keep his/her powder dry' - by this I mean you shouldn't show your best moves too early in the song coz you've got nowhere to go when the psg solo comes round....
I think this would have been improved by the theory of 'less is more'. The steel would have made a much bigger impact had it come in, say, at the end of the first verse of the song with a few sparse phrases, then started to build.
But heck, what do I know?
what are these pedals for, again?

Thanks for the replies - very much appreciated. Yes, overplaying - it's hard not to though when there's no one to stare daggers at you  Saving it is good advice. Not sure I'm at the solo stage yet though.

Thanks for listening.

Peter

Peter, Just had a listen, while I agree with whats already been said, if that really is your first recording and and you only started last autumn, I would be immensely proud of that. Well done, Donny.

Thanks Donny for the encouragement. It's not my first recording (done a lot of dodgy ones over the years) but it is my first pedal steel one.

Thanks again!
