Love potion number 9

Since about 1996 I quit playing country music after all the arguments between the line dancers and the traditional dancers, and old country against new country. I went back to my roots and have been doing 50's and 60's in a band and also a couple of duos. Because of this the steel was confined to the back of the garage before I eventually sold it. But then a couple of years ago I bought a steel from John Roche and then eventually a few lap steels and the interest came back until it reached a point where I can't leave it alone. I have been wondering what steel would sound like in a lot of the numbers within the 50's 60's era and recently did this recording of Love Potion Number 9 - and old 50's song from The Coasters. I was using Band In A Box 2015 with real tracks, and the rythmn I needed I took from the country set. One of the tracks was steel guitar and usually I would mute this, but on this occasion decided not to.

So - it's not me on steel - but does it work?

Seems to work ok
Personally I think steel works with most musical styles.......rock and roll is just a mixture of blues and country anyway is it not. I was thinking about learning a couple of old punk tunes the other day

Have a go at it mate. I think you are right. Just have to convince my other guitarist to take over on some lead.

Go ahead with the punk tune - would like to hear.

I was looking through some rockabilly on YouTube and found Steel Guitar Rock. Having a go at this at the moment on C6 lap steel.

I was listening to the follow on number Apache on your sound cloud and although you managed to create the sound of Hank very very close ....could not tell if you were doing the walk as well???

Band In The Box 2015 - band styles(best real styles) - country even - EAGLL.STY

This style includes steel guitar and as I said I will mostly kick them out. I have found however that dependent on the style some are good and some are bad. We must bear in mind that BB is just reaching into a box of bits and stringing them together. Having built up the complete picture on BB I transfer them via the DAW plugin as separate tracks (wav) and then transfer to Cubase. I have been known then to take sections of instruments and cut and paste until I get a good backing. Once built up I then start recording other instruments and voices live. Works a treat.

I have found that some of the bits from BB are a good learning tool especially when you have Paul Franklin on steel amongst others and Brent Mason on guitar. As I said some of them are disjointed but I know with Love Potion I was thinking "Thats a lovely move" and then try it out on my own steel. Nice to get into the thinking of some of these players. Even if disjointed I have filled in the gaps, or taken a bit from one bar and a bit from another. It's a good tool.

I think that works very well, indeed. And, you're absolutely bang on Mick, BIAB is a great tool
I never knew it was that calibre of musician that supplied the parts amazing.

I've only used the midi, as opposed to real tracks, side of it, and if I want to 'go large', I export the song as midi and use Virtual Instruments (EZdrummer, Garritan etc) within Reaper (the people's software ). It really is the dog's b*!!*^ks, for even just practice.
