My sister sent me a link to this from India's Got Talent. Interesting Lap Steel the guys playing, was trying to see what the things he has on the front of his Lap were but not enough detailed shots to see them properly. Looks like some sort of tuner?
Who needs a Sitar!

Came to me that the things on the front of his Lap look like tuners, maybe he's got sympathetic strings set up to give it a Sitar type sound?

You should check out Debashish Bhattacharya. He introduced the slide guitar into Indian classical music.

Thanks for the steer Billy, just done a Google search, looks interesting. Looks like he has adapted the lap steel to suit Indian music, sympathetic strings?

Some of the Indian players have got incredible left hands, and their intonation is totally accurate. No mean feat when the bar is being moved at the speed that the Indian mode is played at. As Billy White wrote, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is one of the best steel players in India, if not the world.
