SOLO: my new solo steel album release! And it's free!!

Fri Dec 10, 2021 5:12 pm

Hi All

After about a year's work, I have just released 'SOLO' my solo steel album with 20 tracks of steel wizardry (kind of).

Here is a sample, it's track 2 and is in fact 8 tracks in one (a set of variations). Check it out here, and remember, the whole thing is offered as a free download (I was feeling Christmassy).

Enjoy it, there's something for everyone!!

Hi Gary
About halfway through listening to it and had to comment. This is fracking brilliant! (So far anyway). You may be the Bela Fleck of the steel guitar! Good one!
Cheers

It gets better in the second half (Ha, kidding)

But thanks Calum for breaking BSS ranks...the silence was getting deafening, although really I should be immune to it by now.

BTW: Someone on the forum was commenting recently on the lack of young players, which there certainly is. But, let's be clear, having young players doesn't necessarily mean having players who are committed to promoting the psg into some sort of creative, innovative, relevant future. Let's face it, a lot of young players just want to play like the old players, which is fine (I did too), but now that I'm old I don't want to anymore. This album is one small part of my own tiny little resistance movement. I'm now working on a 45-minute piece for an electronica gig for my son. Actually, some of your loops might come in handy!!

Thanks again Calum

G

It broke my internet for the second day in a row so hearing the rest will have to wait. I strongly suspect that a new ‘young’ steel player will one day burst open the whole pedal steel thing and give the instrument a future outside of the museum. But in the meantime, I shall make more strange sounds and listen to some of yours.
Cheers

Gary, I really like the sound of your steel on the first tracks and wish I could get a decent recorded sound like that but I am useing an old camcorder and however quietly I play it over loads the mic input on the camcorder The last track I thought was an exercise in dexterity which you have obviously got by the bucket load but for me it did not have the appeal of the previous tracks but well done for the whole project.

Thanks for listening John!

As for my sound: I think it's acceptable, no more than that. I think the sound I actually get (in the room) is significantly better, but mic-ing it up and capturing it takes forever, and often doesn't end up working, so I tend nowadays to go for the easy and lazy option, i.e. straight out of the back of the amp into my interface. To me, the bass becomes a bit plummy and the life of the sound is sucked out slightly, but it's a compromise. We all love the sound of the steel, but I've had to sacrifice some of that to get on with improving my playing, which is my main priority. And, yes, recording with a camcorder or (as in my case when doing videos) a camera is very problematic.

And yes, as my 'variations in D' (sounds grand) went on I progressed up the neck of the steel, with the inevitable ear-piercing consequences!!

But I couldn't resist going too far (as always).

Thanks again.

G

I've always enjoyed your offerings Gary. I love the musicality and the feel. You are a really good player mate. Well done and keep them coming. :D

Thanks Ken...much appreciated! OK, I sometimes get a bit paranoid...who doesn't?

I'll keep them coming don't worry

In the meantime, I hope you and yours have a great Christmas, or as close as possible in these dark times. As for me, I'm off to Thailand (Covid permitting of course!)

Have a good one

You too mate. Thailand is a very exotic way to spend Christmas. Don't forget to wear your mask in the airport. ;)

Ken

I've concluded that Thailand is probably one of the few countries I could make it as a steel player...famous last words.

Anyway, wish me luck!
