New Material

Tue Jul 28, 2020 8:47 pm

Hi All

When your weekly Soundcloud plays go down from 400+ to zero you know it's time for some revisions and refreshing, so I've deleted everything from my Soundcloud site and replaced it with some different stuff: have a listen.

...and thanks those who have done so in the past.

Hi Gary
I have listened and it gave me a thought. After the zombie plague is over, someone should organise a ‘Steel Guitar Unconvention’. A forum for players of everything ‘except’ what is normally expected of the steel guitar. A celebration of strange. Anyone?
Cheers
Calum

I genuinely think that would be a great idea, but then I would wouldn't I? I guess the problem would be that an unconvention would need to be completely unlike a convention, so it would be no use at all getting a load of old codgers like me taking the stage and taking it in turns to play weirdly. So what's the alternative? I can think of a perfect unconvenor though: you yourself Calum.

And, anyway, what's strange about my playing? Cheek!

I can guarantee that the conventional players will be playing 3 chords to a million people, and the unconventional players will be playing a million chords to 3 people.

Sorry folks, that's just how it is

Well personally I find the three chord song a bit ‘busy’. Give me a good drone and pretty much nothing else for the first 20 minutes of a piece.
Shame its not for you Zeb! Your talk on springs would have made a nice counterpoint to a discussion about neaps....

If I knew what neaps meant I could possibly formulate a reply.
When I googled it, I found that it was the NorthEast Assessment and Psychology Services, and that one of the services it offers is as follows: 'We can provide assessment and diagnosis of clinical and educational disorders. We offer a range of counselling and psychotherapy models of support'.

So it looks like I need to see a shrink, to make me less of a pedal steel philistine

Spot on!

Richard, "neaps" is the Scottish word for turnips or in England, swedes. Hope that makes the discussion point clear. Donny.

Neaps. Springs. Tides! We’re supposed to be a :censored: island nation or 4 so I thought at least one person would get that. Re chords. As the pedal steel in ‘classic’ country mode spends its whole time playing suspended, diminished, 6th, 9th, 13th and all the rest over the top of a 3 chord song, its a bit rich to play the innocent just because you don’t know what they’re called....

I don't think any of this is 'spot on.' Calum, it is/was a great idea, and will remain so. As for the three chords...I'm, speechless...and will remain, so signing out on this discussion: enjoy!
