12" Speaker v 15"Speaker

Postby Dave Kirk » Fri Sep 06, 2013 9:10 am

I noticed a Guy on You Tube, who had a Cabinet made for his Nashville 112 with a 15” speaker.

I have often wondered if I have been losing out on depth by using my Nashville 112 on stage albeit the Band I play with do mike me through the PA
I do prefer taking the Nashville 112 to gigs as it is nice and light, and although I have a Session 400 Nashville 400 & an Evans 500FET all with 15” speakers, they are a bit on the heavy side and I am not getting any younger.
So I knocked up a new Cabinet to fit the Nashville 112 amp into which was 4” higher to accommodate a 15” black widow.
I now wish I hadn’t bothered! Because when I stood it along side another one of my Nashville 112 amps to hear the difference the 112 with the 12” beat it hands down on depth& warmth if anything the 15” was a bit lightweight sounding and not the same as when in my other amps.
Perhaps they are a little bit inefficient and need those 200 watts to move the cone, and 80watts is not enough to make them work.
I hope this has not been a bit anorakish for you players out there but, it has proved to me that perhaps Peavey have got it right with this little amp.
Kindest Regards

Dave, I moved on to the MB200 and looked at both 12inch and 15inch Sica Neo speakers, decided to go for 12inch , built a cabinet , and have not regretted it.I have a 112 that I keep as a back up amp, tone from both is similar but output from the MB is a lot higher. The amp and cab weigh in around 21lbs.At first thought it won't stand up to it, but two years later it is going strong, have played all sort of venues and it sounded good in them all (not that 112 didn't). Technology has moved on , lets face it you wouldn't walk about with the old brick mobile phone you used to have ten years ago. :D
MSA Millennium SD1O, GK MB200,Sica 12 and Telonics 15 speakers , Joyo American Sound pre amp, Jay Ganz Straight Ahead 500w class D Amp, Hilton pedal, Peterson tuners,Digitech RP150,Scott Dixon seat/ flight case.
