All through my playing life i have been impressed by steel players that create their own style. In the early days there was always a lot of copying of American players, such as LLOYD & BUDDY etc,but as time has gone on players are branching out in their own styles and technique. One such player, that i cant get enough of,is Buzz Evans.Hes overall enjoyment of what he is playing is visable as well as wonderful listening. He just shows what it is about to do your own thing on the steel. His own arrangements of classics is amazing.Have a look at him on YOU TUBE,you wont be sorry.
All you young players out there should take note of this type of playing and the type of players that do their own thing.

I had the privelige to meet Buzz last year at the famous Broken Spoke saloon bar in Austin, Texas. I had never seen him play before, and we went to a mid week gig to see the Bo Porter Band who Buzz was with at the time. There were 2 bands playing. The first band were not the worst band in the world, but they were just like them. Absolute rubbish, and the steel player, who had been playing for years, was poor. There were no more than 12 people in the audience.
When Bo Porter's band came on, it was terrific Texas shuffles all night. Buzz is an excellent steel and lead player, equally gifted on both. I found him to be delightfully excentric (in a nice way), and immensely friendly. His YouTube clips do not do him justice, take it from me. The sad part was that both bands were just playing for tips from a tip jar. A travesty for a great band like Bo Porter's. I understand that Buzz has returned to Las Vegas which is his home city.

During a visit to Texas a couple of Years ago We drove out of Austin to see Buzz and His partner Ross Evans playing in a club.
I spoke to both guys at each break and they were thrilled to think I had travelled some distance to see them.
Ross Evans has a tremendous voice and sings great songs,He plays great guitar too.Buzz had just taken delivery of His Mullen G3 and His playing was a delight, his Pink Panther theme was well worth the admission money.
The locals were drifting away at about 11.PM and for the last 45 minutes there were only about twenty people in the club, could'nt understand this at all,on a Friday night.
Listen to this for a taster

Billy,
Thanks for those clips you supplied, fantastic.I am very envious of you and Ken meeting this guy. There are others like him and it is part of what makes the steel such a
marvellous instrument.Keep up the playing lads.Cheers Brian.
