Amp settings

Postby Zumbilly(Murdoch) » Thu Oct 20, 2011 2:54 pm

I have read, over the years that if You have an amp with mid range controls it should be set at the 750-800 frequency and then the mids reduced a fair bit.A lot has been said about this being necessary for Peavey amps which would appear to have a "honkey" mid range.
I would guess that many people have set their amps this way because "that is how You do it" OK.
Is that the way You do it?
I guess amp types and speakers have a lot to do with it.
Best regards
Billy

Setting the Mid and Range controls so they're at a "ten to two" position is roughly about right.

I think you'll find that it's the pickup and not the Amp that has the mid-range problem. True about all magnetic guitar pickups I believe...

Steel guitars are notoriously heavy on mid-range Billy. It is a question of dialling out some mids if your amp is heavy on mids like Peavey's.

Listen to Buddy & Lloyd. Both take out mid range. Herby Wallace, Jimmy Day and John Hughey liked strong mids. They all make their tone work for them.

Seems to me that on amps with parametric middle dials there's a need to dial out 800 range to avoid honk. I have to fine tune my NV112 mids (pretty much the 10 to 2) and roll off quite a lot of bass. Not an issue on my other amps. On my ZT (my amp of choice for gigging) neutral bass & treble settings are fine.

I take out a lot of the frequencies of 800 on my PV amps, but therein is the problem. I turn up the bass because the sound can becoume a little thin on the bottom end once the mids have been reduced. My Bradshaw Webb amp already scoops out mids on switch setting no. 2.

Peaveys are great and reliable amps, but that mid-range honk is overpowering, especially when you go from using a Fender Twin to PV. It is impossible to replicate that clean full Fender sound on a Peavey. The Nashville 400 had less mid range problem for me than the Session 500. That was not an amp for me.

I also find that Black Widows have more mid range than JBL's and Emminence speakers.
