yeah good point Dave, re fret markers, im using a steel with the raised sho bud markers, so yeah, they are well defined, so maybe easier, but the fact that you are aware of not quite pitching right, would suggest that your only problem is, having a different steel to contend with, you will soon get familiar with it, you dont get to have played at wembley several times unless you are pretty darn good, and can pitch, its the players who are not pitching well, and dont realise it, that are the worry,
just one other thing regarding ear training, i quite often hum a note in my head, then walk over to one of my guitars and play an 'E' and am never even as much as a semi tone out, i do surprise my self with that one, does anyone else find the same???
