I'm not so sure Bob, there are some that I really do loath and would gladly cut off their hands, purely as a service to those of us who like things in tune.. Fortunately none of the aforementioned are in this category in fact they all set a standard and yardstick we all should aspire to.
Professional etiquette prevents me from naming those I loath, well not so much loathe but just consider detrimental to the instrument's furtherance, propagation and dissemination of it's uniqueness and musicalities ..

Of course ye know I jest somewhat...

Back to the OP's question, I'd ring Jerry Byrd and ask him why on earth he didn't expand his instrument base to include the pedal steel. He was a master of the resonator and lap steel, as his recordings with Hank Williams and Marty Robbins testify. I just wonder what benefits he could have brought to the pedal steel world.

He was a master of double tracked harmonies AND use of the volume (Swell) pedal.

I know for one thing, he could have taught those that don't know, just how to slant (Back and Forward, split and normal) without moving the forearm. He showed us all that it came from the wrist and fingers ONLY.

Loath, Loathe or Boath! I doubt players of ambiguous tuning are detrimental to the instrument, I would suggest they require sympathy, and who knows they perhaps encourage those not quite at the pinnacle of their PSG career to strive for 'the true note on a ‘I can do better than that basis!’ Yes they don’t quite accurately flatten their E’s but hey they may just encourage the rest of us to do just that! A positive result perhaps??!
Anyway none of that related to my remark it was one of personalities! Not playing perfection!

Well you haven't attended an Aloha Dream event...Pat does a roaring trade in razor blades, (for the wrists of those listeners who can't take any more)
There are players who get the prize for "Bet you can't Guess the Tune", those who are world champions at missing an odd beat/bar hither and thither, and those who (at 80 years of age) have JUST started to learn, but are finding the hearing aid overloads with an an amp any stronger than a Micro-Cube..
You can always recognise where our conventions are, the carpark is equally divided betwixt car spaces and Zimmer frame "hitchin' posts"...

The telephone exchange tells Me that the calls to British players has been disappointing.None for Sarah,Gerry Hogan,Derek Thurlby,Dave Kirk,Ken Byng
Gordon Huntly,Barry Gaskell and several others.These players are at the top of the Brit list.

The GOOD living players 'phones are mostly engaged taking bookings, the deceased ones are now on Skype giving lessons..except for the few who went "Down Below" and they're having a "Devil of a Time"

In all seriousness (As if I could be !!) Sol Hoopii, Benny 'Feet' Rodgers, Eddie Bush, Andy Iona, Sam Koki, Barney Isaacs Jr. Jeff Newman, Jerry Byrd, Joachim Murphy and Jules ah See... one minute each..or maybe a ten minute 'Conference Call'.. they would be my choice.. Baz, I am a little surprised that a player of your ability passes remarks on a forum about how other steelies play. I am sure a lot of us would dearly love your experience and knowledge of our instrument. We all live and hopefully learn but may never reach your standard but should that be open for ridicule?
