Do 2 into 1 actually go?

Postby 7string » Sat Nov 19, 2011 7:51 pm

This is only my 2nd topic, so be gentle please.

I've been enjoying the beginnings of my venture into psg so much that I'm thinking of selling some gear to finance a better instrument. I'm a country fan anyway, but also love the stylings of Buddy Charleton with the Texas Troubadours. In fact, it was hearing his playing with Leon Rhodes which got me thinking about getting a steel anyway.

So getting to the point, I'd love to be able to play E9 and C6 but don't have that much space for a D10. With one neck, is it possible to cover both E9 and C6, or is the E9/B6 universal kind of a halfway house between the two? Do many consider a 12 string Universal a bit of an abomination and that the D10 is the proper(?!) way to go.

Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Mark

You might want to consider a 12 string extended E9 guitar. you can get all the country stuff plus the psuedo C6 type chords. Some examples of C6 sounds on E9 can be found on the internet. Jody Cameron is a good example.

i would say 2 goes into 1
it does boil down to what kind of musik you want to play on it 7S
the E9 tuning was derived from the original C6 tuning - it had to be
there's plenty of C6 to be played on E9
the diff is the register & certain chords that aren't as easy to obtain on E9 than on C6-
E9 isn't as low as the C6 - nevertheless there are C6 type voicings w: pedals A & B, B & C & the Es to Eb lever
the 7th tone on string 9 is characteristic to E9 but if you lower it a half tone ( to C#) you're back in bizness
may i add the Vertical lever that lowers string 5 a half tone : quite handy
all too often, one hears the high end being played on E9 & not enough pickers go into the low end - i find that's where you gotta go if you want a fuller sound
OK so you don't get certain altered or easy Maj7 chords on E9 compared to C6
the Universal 12 seems a very good compromise since it does have both tunings BUT ! it's not C6 but B6
which means the fret positions change compared to C6
on C6 playing in Eb (fret 3 or 10) - F (fret 5 or 12) - Bb (fret 10 or 5) are logical positions - whereas B6 means you have to adjust a half step lower
no big deal i guess - one get's the hang pretty quick
as to 12 strings, i often wonder what is the real use of having 2 lxtra low strings ?
i would prefer one low string like the F on string 9 on C6 & i'd add a higher string like a G on 1
heck, i have'nt even sat behind a U12 - so maybe i should shut up
since two heads are better than one - that's why i chose a D10
when you break a string, you still have the 2nd neck to play on

Well I was fortunate to have Donny Johnston visit yesterday and have a look at my pedal steel. Geez, it's great to see a steel player close up  Thanks to Donny for his time and inspiration.

The problem became apparent though, that even though my wee Little Buddy pedal steel isn't too bad at all, it's only a 3+1 and I'll need more pedals and levers in the future.

So I've taken the decision to sell one of my basses (a Dingwall Combustion 5 string) and then the Little Buddy to finance a better steel. I'd like to think I'll find one which will last me for many years to come. After I've sold the bass, which will make up the bulk of the budget, the Little Buddy will be up for sale as well. Then the search for something suitable begins
