You're not wrong there, Ken. What a career, such a variety of artists he accompanied. And it sounds like there was a deep mutual respect between Vince Gill and himself.
I could be wrong, but I don't think there are too many players who have a signature 'sound'. I've heard and seen the phrase, 'The Hughey Sound' bandied about many times.

What a player, what a gentleman, I always describe Papa John as the master of falling from a note. If you listen carefully when he slides up the neck to his require note, he immediately falls away from it in a beautifully melancholic manner.
Now that right there is what ya call "callin' the dawgs home son".
He also happens to be Billy Murdoch's favourite player, and if that's not an accolade, I don't know what is.

Great comments guys. For me, the two most recognisable pedal steel players via their styles are John Hughey and Lloyd Green. I had the pleasure of seeing John play at the London Palladium in 1970 backing Conway Twitty. JH was the only lead instrumentalist in the band and was amazing. His left hand vibrato was so expressive and he knocked me out when he did a solo on C6 to Twitty's Johnny B Goode. It brought the house down.

After the show, I was lucky enough to get to meet John outside the theatre where he was waiting for the tour bus. I was so overawed getting to speak to the great man, that I could hardly speak. I needn't have worried. John was so pleased to meet a fellow steel player that he took over the conversation and put me completely at ease. He was a fellow Day player, and sung the praises of the Emmons push pull guitar and of Buddy Emmons himself. Lloyd Green told me that John's solo on Vince Gill's Look At Us is probably the best pedal steel solo of all time, even surpassing Tom Brumley's Together Again.
