New specs

Postby Nick Bidmade » Tue Sep 01, 2015 6:01 pm

I've worn reading glasses for a number of years, but got my first pair of varifocals today :(

Playing steel has just become even more difficult! Never mind parallax, the frets slant left and right, depending on which eye I'm looking through. I can't focus properly on my music stand and to try and look at music on the stand, I have to lift my head so far up I can't see the fretboard anymore, and when I drop my eyes back to the fretboard, it's all blurred.

Ho hum. I'm told I will get used to them.

My advice to younger players - don't get old 8-)

Hi Nick,
Welcome to the old world.
I've been wearing Varifocals since around 1996, the first pair made in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. When I first wore them I couldn't see the ground, most disconcerting, I thought I was going blind! Eventually a regular wearer gave me this tip. Point your nose at the subject, then move your head up and down slowly until it all comes into focus. Eventually you do it without even thinking about it.
I haven't fallen over since the last bottle of Pinot Noir?
See you soon,
Keith.

I held off as long as I could as I didn't want to lose my street cred. Now I am too old to be bothered.

Hang on - street cred? - what makes me think that some young bit of stuff is going to chase anyway

Recently I've noticed young women looking at me in an interested way. I was feeling a warm glow inside until I realised they were probably thinking - He looks a bit like my grandad

Geoff, I know what you mean. I keep getting these e-mails at work from (allegedly) young women offering to be my "s3x slave". Where the hell were they all when I was young enough to take them up on it?
