C6th players, how many of you use a D on the first string, makes it interesting. :?:

Thanks to Buddy Emmons, me thinks most C6 pickers have a D on 1
i do ( i'm a copycat )
it's logical & fits right in for scale & melody knitting
the G that was once on 1 can be had by moving up 3 frets from the 0 position
in C : fret 0 to fret 3 using pedal 5 & the lever that raises string 3 a half step - strings 2 3 4 5
for those that don't have that lever, you're missing out on some good stuff

I went back to a G on top, I just never got away with the D. I did like the single note runs that the D delivers but lost too much of my own style using the three frets up thing that CB talks about. Doing that recovered the "G on top", but couldn't get most of the chords below to back that up. Also I couldn't find a way to recover the sound of 1st and 2nd string raises you get from pedals 5 + 6. I made the change back to a G after doing more work on dobro and taking up the plank; i.e. straight 8 non-pedal.
Doug Jernigan sometimes re-tunes his top string between G and D - honest! :o
PS - A few months ago I was just too late to buy a Sierra D-11 that would have given me the G and D on top; although I didn't figure out what to add to the E9th!

12 string uni. At the first fret I get ém both plus an A above. Now I just have to figure out what to do with them   :guitar:

I use the G on top but take the E down to D on a knee. Also, have always used pedal 7 on a knee lever.

I think Buddy uses a D for single string runs that give him part of his signature style.

Try both before you decide.

Interesting Tony - I have found myself with left foot on 5 and right foot dabbing 7, so putting that on a KL looks tempting. What do you have on the pedals though?
