lap steeler with adele

Sun Jan 01, 2012 11:47 pm

just caught the last ten minutes or so of Adele in concert at the royal albert hall on bbc 1, who i really like, and when it came to my favourite song of hers 'to make you feel my love' it featured, under spot light, right throughout the song, a lap steel guitar, and was very tastefully played, just thought it was unusual to see lap steel in that kind of concert, no idea who the player was,

I saw that too and I agree, very tasteful playing and good tone. I didn't recognise the player or the make of the lap steel.

Just had a quick Google for the info.

Can't see anything on the make of the steel, but the player seems to be Tim Van Der Kuil.

I've seen this too. You are right about the player's name. If I hadn't seen it being played I'd swear it was a pedal steel, does anyone know how he gets that effect? He doesn't appear to be twisting the tone bar but I can hear a definite shift on one string and not on the other.

didn't see that but will google to see if it's on the internet. I did see Jack White on Jools Holland the other week who had a pedal steel player in both bands, one band all women and the other band all fellas. They didn't seem to be doing a huge amount but it was good to see him including steel guitars and them being seen on the show.

Been doing some reading today - I think what's confusing me is that I never use C6 tuning, because I don't have C6 strings. The intervals in C6 seem to be more suitable for lap steel than the intervals available when using "regular" strings. So maybe the guy is playing in C6 and slanting the bar.

Ok..this is one of those new lap steels where there is a mech on the bridge that can be pressed down with the right hand that has the same effect of pulling the strings as the pedals and levers on a pedal steel...if you watch his right hand very carefully at 2.09 you can just see this movement....someone showed me one of these a few months ago, snazzy eh???

Problem solved

It's a Duesenberg Pomona "Multibender" (somewhere around £1000) they even have a built in capo that slides uo the neck!
I'm sure string-benders are available as retrofit jobbies, Bigsby used to make them ("Palm-pedals") with one or two levers and Hipshot probably do them too, Duesenberg might even sell them. However, you can always practice slants and pulling strings behind the bar. And DO try C6th! There's a lot it can do. :D
