SSGW 27th June

Postby Donny Johnston » Wed May 24, 2017 5:39 am

This month is going to be one of our world famous campfire nights. If you play another instrument other than steel bring it. There are no tunes selected, play what you want. See you there. Donny.

Sorry to be missing that one (and all the other ones I've missed....). Sadly having to work for a living at the moment whilst fitting in a couple of sailing adventures. Would like to have added some five string banjo to the mix as I believe you also have a string bass player there as well as a couple of fine mandolins players. A bluegrass sensation just waiting to happen. Just need to find a guitarist who knows the 'proper' chords for foggy mountain breakdown..... Not sure it would help my steel playing though....
Cheers

Sorry to dampen all the enthusiasm, I have had a request from Bob to move the campfire night to the July meeting, Because of the situation with his dad he would not be able to make the June meeting as a campfire night, all the extra equipment takes time to load up and set up, so I have decided to grant his stay of execution. I hope to have the pleasure of introducing the new bluegrass sensation : THE HUNNERS & HADDOCK GARTCOSH MOUNTAIN BOYS at the July meeting.

Ok Hunners, you're on!
Actually watching some fast picking steel would be useful so I'll dust off the banjo and see if I can return to form. Much prefer Pony Express from Deliverance as every walloper plays Dueling and imo it's not really very good. The thing that every cover I've heard of foggy mountain gets wrong is the guitar chords. On the original it's clearly an E major v the E minor on the banjo which is what makes the tune so mental.
Anyway I'm sailing to Iceland starting this Sunday and I'll take the banjo as the steel is about as portable as my fridge freezer. Practicing banjo on a small boat in the North Atlantic while the crew try to sleep.... What could possibly go wrong?
Cheers
Calum
Ps taking a banjo to a knife fight might work out ok. Guy in America was jailed for killing his wife with two banjos. First one broke when he hit her so he went and got another......
