Steel Guitar Jam Sessions !

Postby Basil Henriques » Mon Aug 01, 2011 8:31 pm

Jam Sessions according to Bobbe Seymour,
Steel guitar jam sessions or guitar pulls. Sometimes steel players like to get together for a guitar pull or jam. When they do they'll setup in a round circle with one or two amps in the middle aiming straight up at the ceiling. Something to keep time, a loud metronome or tracks or possibly even a live drummer and bass player. Lord knows, don't ever let a singer in one of these get-togethers because you'll end up getting nothing done.

Each steel player will take about two verses, pass it to the next player, sit and study what everybody else plays and it doesn't matter if it takes an hour per song. Remember, you shouldn't have anybody in there where you're jamming that will be listening for their own musical pleasure. The jam session is for musicians only and nobody else should be in the same town or county. You'll notice all the dogs and cats will leave the area. You don't need some girl or wife hanging around saying "Let ole Billy sing one!" And you never, ever, ever setup a PA set on a jam session.

Ok troops. Send me some questions about jam sessions if you wish.

Maybe that's where we're all going wrong ?
Maybe we should differentiate betwixt a Steel Guitar Jam session and a "Band Concert" interspersed with solo spots.

I don`t always agree with ol Bobby on everything, though I have experienced a time when a singer could not turn up (so he said) so I asked another three who also could not turn up......... in the event THEY ALL TURNED UP!!
That was a bad situation and I caught some flak from it from one or two players but it was a difficult situation to control and I think I handled it to the best of my ability........ guys it ain`t an easy thing to run a steelies meeting... you will never please every one :(
I think the guy`s I use now sing just enough to give folks an idea of how the tune goes ( and that can be helpful ) and then let the steelies have at it.... this works ok IMHO and also give guy`s a chance to play backing for a real singer not just "their" solo spot.
Anyway, I doubt if Bobby Seymour is gonna turn up so it don`t make no real diff.....?????

What I will tell you all is at some point during the day my new singer Kelly is gonna sing about two or three songs with just me on steel and backing tracks for Promo for our Duo ( Bob has been good enough to agree to video us ) I hope that you guys that would prefer nothing but steel all day will forgive us for that but if not, you have been forwarned ...go get a burger or something.....it won`t take long....those that stay may well enjoy it Kelly is a fine singer and much better lookin than me ;)
