Millport Country Festival

Sun Sep 02, 2018 8:03 am

Anyone going to this or got any recommendations of ‘must see’ bands or players? I’m planning on floating down next weekend for some carnage. I was offered someone’s revolver so that I could have a go at the gunfights but have decided its a bad idea. Though I always liked the idea of a ‘best of three’ gunfight. It could have changed the plot of many a good Saturday afternoon matinee........
Cheers

Calum, you would probably be hard pushed to find a band with a steel player there. As with most country venues these days you would probably find duos with backing tracks, mainly playing Nashville pop music. Personally I would not cross the street to see most of them.

Well, at least Ashley Campbell plays a half decent banjo!

Had a quick look at line up, most I would classify as Americana/Alt country, and what I would class as Hipster/folky type duos/trios, just not my idea of Country, or my to my taste. There are a few local duo/trios on, doing more traditional stuff, but again a lot of backing tracks.

Hi Calum, you didn't say what 'kind' of country you're into but my band is going to be there and we do the classic honky tonk stuff, mostly covers and a few originals. As far as I can see we're the only band representing Hank, Merle, Willie and the rest but I could be wrong. You won't see any stunt steel guitar from me, just the old licks and some good old tunes. We're on at 2:30 on Saturday.

It will be interesting to see how we go down among the new country fans, maybe this old music has had it's day. We played a London pub last night and at the end of two hours of playing to the regulars' backs one woman shouted "play something good!"

Bit rude.

Maybe we're crap I don't know. Anyway we've been invited and we're doing the 900 mile round trip to play so if you're about come and say hello! :D

Johnathan, glad to see “real” Country being represented, enjoy it.

Hi Jonathan
I’m not really a ‘country ‘ fan but then I like Hank, Merle and Willie quite a lot so perhaps I am. Will do my best to catch your set and I’m planning on a few refreshments which helps to temper any rough edges. I’m sure you’ll be great!
Cheers

Just caught Jonathan s set at the festival. This is a great event and highly recommended. Annual event for me now! Great music, brilliant atmosphere, beer, wine woman and song. Also turned out really sunny and dry. Johnny Cash and Elvis on later too!
