Three picks can widen the scope for chords and arpeggios but at the cost of having more ironmongery in a limited space inside your fist. Two are easier to keep from clashing. Three were strongly advocated several decades ago by Tom Bradshaw, a big universal tuning devotee and three picks gained some popularity with some uni players.
