Fender 400 String breakage

I know, I know,
These old fenders are pretty renowned for string breakages on the changers, but Im starting to have persistent trouble with my G# or 3rd string. Usually i stick a .10 on there, but recently, when i replace it, it snaps straight away once i apply pressures to the B pedal. Would a .09 be a better idea?
I removed the bridge and polished it for ages with 00 grade steel wool, and that got rid of a few little burrs, but it keeps happening, does anyone have an suggestions? Other than buying shares in Ernie Ball?

Kindest Regards,
H

If it's of any help, the G# in the SIT strings from John Davis, is 0.11 :?

Don't know what tuning you're using, a friend of mine in the 70s tuned to a Eb9 and moved the G# up a tuning peg to reduce the angle between the roller nut and the tuning peg. Donny.

Ask the Bazil, he's the man.

Sorry, I'm in e9 with the lower two strings omitted. Cranked an .11 on last night and it managed a rehearsal, a .09 an it just fell to bits!
Thanks all.

Where is the string breaking? I have an Excel that rips G# (3rd) strings apart unless i use Ernie Ball strings with the nylon wrap around the ball end.

Hi Chris, just for information I have an Excel keyless with 25" scale and use GHS stings. I use 0.11PG strings on the G# and have never broken one yet after six years, Les
