what's everyone's opinion on open or closed back speakers?
I was reading on the us forum that having a closed back speaker gives you the bass response that you 'need' for pedal steel .
is this true?!

I have never used a closed back speaker, only used Fender amps, Twin & Steel King. More than happy with the sound.

Actually open back cabs seem to generate a fuller bass on stage, but speakers work better in a sealed cab when there are bassier notes being generated. Explained better than I can do it here. http://www.eminence.com/2011/06/sealed- ... nclosures/

thanks guys!
Ken that is an interesting read, loads of detail and a bit above my head but I will persevere..!
my main amp is a fender 75 valve amp with a 15" open back speaker
I've also got a roland super-cube tranny from the 90s with a 15" closed back cab and it seems to get a bigger or perhaps 'tighter' bass response.
I find the fender 75 is a bit muddy in the lower register
never been sure if it was speaker/valves/enclosure etc..

Henry, that would be the accumulated fluff in the enclosure...
