Source for threaded rod to make pedal rods?

Postby Rigby » Mon Nov 10, 2025 7:06 pm

Hi,

I'm trying to track down some studding to make new pedal rods, in line with John Davis's advice, but I've been completely unable to find suitable studding. I can only find double ended M5 studding in lengths up to 250mm. The metre-long studding I can find is fully threaded along its entire length.

Does anyone have a source for long pieces of M5 or similar studding that's not fully threaded?

the soloution i offered was a quick fix that works, if the threading offends you why not buy some 5mm rod and thread it yourself or get some sheathing for the threaded rod to cover what offends.

Hi John, your advice was very gratefully received, I think I just misunderstood you! Yes I guess there's no practical reason not to use the fully threaded stuff.

What guitar are you putting these on? Ball joints or hex fittings on the bottom?

The originals if from the US will be 10/32" thread and your 5mm will give you a struggle to cut the thread unless you use 5mm ball joints.

I have just run out of my material but have it coming for mid week next week I will have 30 meters of 3/16" stainless rod!!

3/16" is the standard US pedal rod width (yours may not be that size but it is very likely they will!)

Thanks Bob,

It started life as a Springfield, though I think most of it is now a Bennett. I need to lengthen the legs and make longer rods.

The rods have ball joints which are not metric. They will go a couple of turns onto an M5 thread but no further. On the other hand an M5 nut will happily go onto the rod. So I've bought some M5 ball joints and I have couple of two inch lengths of M5 threaded rod and I was going to try bodging it by using studding connectors to extend the rods.

But at the moment this is all waiting for someone to sort out the legs.
