Hi all,
Long time, no post. I hope you're all keeping well out there.
Now, stop me if you've heard this one... The nylon hex tuning nuts on my Fender are crapping at an alarming rate just lately. At 50 years old they've had had a good innings.
I had a brainwave yesterday to make emergency replacements out of old pencils, and it's working quite well so far. How long they'll last I don't know. But they've got me out of a bind and I can make more as and when.
Basically, I cut an ordinary everyday pencil into 4cm lengths, then drilled a 2mm hole up the middle. I used Staedtler brand school pencils, which use decent quality wood and fit perfectly into a standard 7mm socket. The metal rods cut a decent thread into the wood, and the graphite in the lead makes them go on very smoothly.
Just need to make sure the lead is not wider than the rod otherwise it'll just chew through it. Also, using softer lead pencils (HB to 2B) makes it much easier to drill out the middle without going wonky.
Anyway, I hope this. All the best, Nico
