Howdy Folks

Recently saw this ole steel pop up for auction in a local auction and thought it needed rescuing.

Turns out to be a Clayton Moore Mustang made here in sunny England.

Not a whole lot of info about the little home based company out there.. found this on the other Steel Forum from Ian Dickinson.

“The mustang steel guitar was built by Clayton Moore a Canadian designer/Builder. He was in business in the late eighties and advertised in the British Steelies Society Mag.
He also built Lap steels called the "Mustang Remuda" which were available in various options of Six,eight, ten string (twin & Single).
Kealoha Life wrote a review on the "Remuda" which was featured in the BSS in 1987.(I have a Copy available and can send it to you via email if you want it).

The Company Address
Clayton Moore
The Mustang Steel Guitar Co
4 Edgehill Way
Billingham
Cleveland
England.”

Another user named David Hartley added some photos and said:

“Top picture is a Mustang S10 in the workshop. I played it when I visited the factory in 1983 with John Finley (who bought these picture here tonight for me).

Middle picture is of Clayton Moore (a Canadian engineer who designed and built the Mustang guitars)

The bottom picture is of the kit for an S10, which was much cheaper, and was the biggest seller I have been told.”

Found a little thread here speaking about them as well with Martyn @mustang Derek Evans @ derek evans 15 both knowing a bit

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=1856&p=6877&hilit=Mustang#p6877

Thought it could be good to compile all of the info into one thread.

Here is the dude.. oddly showing as an active listing on eBay and posted to Facebook in Feb… same guitar as the stickers on the case are identical.

Hi Joe,
Interesting post, wasn’t sure if any Mustage pedal steels were still around, also not sure how many Clayton built. The late Bill Hemings from here in Bristol was an Hawaiian type lap player. Whome was given a Mustage S10 by Clayton to promote as you state I carried Clayton’s advert in the BSS for some editions of the newsletter. Bill use to bring the pedal steel around here regularly and show me what he could do with it but bless his heart he had played the lap so long that everything he tried playing with the pedal steel was very Hawaiian style, I can’t remember now what happened
to the steel after Bill passed, I know that he was more at home with his lap steels which included one of Clayton’s models.

Ah that is very interesting indeed.. it can be tricky to get used to all the pedals thats for sure.

I haven’t fired this one up yet. I reckon I may need a hand when I finally do! It looks like a real solid machine though.
