Hello all
Thinking of changing out my George L’s E66 pick for something else.
I love the Emmons tone but I’m wanting something with similar clarity but warmer and fuller on the lows/mids.
Any recommendations?

Tim, tried various pick ups, Truetone, GL PF 1+2, E66, original ShoBud, Mullen, but much prefer the Alumitone, it has the top end of the Truetone but without the harshness, passive pickup but with the properties of a humbucker.Have not tried the Telonics as they are pretty expensive, but have heard them on lots of different steels, sound good, but not enough difference to justify price difference.

I am probably the least qualified to opine on "tone" with My noise damaged cloth ears.However I have, over the years had about seven different pickups and the ones I liked best were a BL 710 and a Telonics #84(I think) The Telonics is My favourte a big benefit is the adjustable pole pieces which can "fine" tweak the final tone. A player with very good ears could achieve a superb tone from this item. Probably a bit more expensive than many others on the market. There are probably no bad pickups on the market,One man's meat and all that. Good luck.i

Similarly to Mr McMiser above, I like the Alumitones too in my D10 MSA Legend XL Signature for its clean and full bodied tone, but different pickups can sound better in different guitars. For example, The BL 705s sounds wonderful in my Emmons push pull, and I like the tone that the BL 710s give in my Show Pro. My Sho~Bud has a pair of Jerry Wallace True Tone pups that I put in it, and they are great single coils. Finally I have Telonics pups in my Zum, and they sound pretty good.

I don't know how different pickups sound in the GFI range, but I think their stock pickups have a nice clean tone if a little on the bright side. It's real pity that slide-in pickups aren't generic in all modern pedal steels as per MSA and Sierra guitars. So great in A-B testing comparisons. Like the wise sage Billy Murdoch states above, there are no duff pickups made these days with modern winding machines. 8-)
