here is a silly sugestion.......
I am about to change the strings on my D10...
How about you take my old strings remove the little brass parts and find a pin that fits the hole. Then make suitable support......

Silly suggestion noted John!
The rollers aren't for me, they're for someone else who is embarking on that long road of building his own.
Previously, when building my own steels that possibility did occur to me but I wondered if these would be too small?
I've just measured one and it's 4mm O/D and it would accept a 1.6mm shaft/spindle.
When I made my own (with a great deal of difficuly, not having a metalworking lathe) I used 10mm brass rod and used a 3mm spindle. Getting that pesky hole bang in the middle of the rod was so troublesome without proper tooling.

John, You must still be trying supress those memories of having seen a Carter Starter…..which uses the little roundy bits from guitar strings as its nut rollers.

Julio, I've seen a few Carter Starters but never noticed they had these tiny rollers! (Must pay more attention.)

Thanks to John, Julio and Pete -- I'll pass on your suggestions to the 'new builder'.

Ideally the string guide slot should be different for each string so they sit with the tops at the same height to prevent buzzing at the lower fret positions. I am due to machine my own brass ones to replace the steel ones currently on my Bennett. I have calculated the depth of each V slot. I have done this before and the transformation in the amount of pressure on my tone bar was significant and helped with my arthritis quite a lot.
