Day Setup

Postby ray welmar » Mon Oct 19, 2020 2:34 pm

I recently (as you do) bought another steel (a Bennett) that has a J.Day rather than an Emmons setup. I thought it would be harder but, within my ability, I didn't have that much trouble with the pedals, or the two left knee levers being reversed, but it would be nice to know what the set up for two remaining knee levers would usually be since, as it wasn't new, I have no idea if things have been changed around. I've been hoping to buy one of those charts showing the set up and the tempering but such a thing doesn't seem to be readily available. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ray - the two other KLs on the right knee would usually be the same whether it's a Day or Emmons set-up. Most often RKR would be second string 1/2 tone lower D# - D (sometimes continuing to C# after a half-stop, often achieved by hooking up the 9th string to be lowered D - C#). Then RKL would often be 1st string raise F# - G (or even G#) with the low F# also going to G.
There are a number of variations on that last KL including changes that affect the two top strings and often either the low F# or G# strings. Some even prefer to put the E's levers on separate knees.

Thanks Tony for such a speedy reply. Having checked the changes are as you describe but the assignment of the knee levers, like the opposite pair. is reversed. Thanks again it's been a great help.

Ray.
