Richard, could he not change that so he Raises 4 and 8 rather than lowering 2 and 7? don't know much about these old mavericks, but if its possible it would be a much more useful change to have, No?

Brilliant, thanks Zebedee!
I've just got myself the Winnie Winston PSG book, which seems like as good a place to start as any.
Thanks folks,
Jim

I love mine... have served me well to begin learning E9 and after that the C6 (yes... done a little conversion of the beauty. A topic about that on the US forum is here)
The original setup is 3+1, standard 3 pedals as on any Emmons setup.
But string 2 is the compromising factor on this setup:
it's tuned to D#, and the knee lever lowers it a half tone to D (and at the same time lowering string 8, E to Eb).
This is an unusual thing to do, on no E9 full setup have I seen this happen (on one lever that is...)

I could live without the C pedal. But then again, my intention is not to be an Grand Ole Opry player ;)
Good luck with this Bud

- Thanks for this response, and to everyone else who is contributing.
So am I to presume a past owner has made this change to the set up?
I've located the manual, which is all written for 3+1, but has a loose insert (not very clearly) explaining the 2+2 set up this guitar should have - left knee (or 'E') lever lowering strings 4 & 8 a semitone to D#, and with right knee (or 'D') lowering 2nd string a semitone to D natural, with no suggestion that it lowers string 8 from E to Eb.
Do I carry on with this current set-up, or is there a more standard universal set up that I should be starting out with?
And if I SHOULD change it, is this easy enough to do myself?

Thanks in advance,
Jim

like many i too learned on a Mav & Winnie's book
mine only had 1 knee lever ( the E lever ) on RKL that lowered 4 & 8 E to Eb ( major 3rd of B )
on a psg, the E lever is the most often used lever of all
then comes the D lever that lowers string 2 Eb to D
this is all you need to get started believe me
note that the E9 tuning has 2 chords without using any pedals or levers : E & B at fret 0
when you push pedals A &B you get the A chord at fret 0 too
the " pesky " second string is a vital element in scales & chords - so yes, you MUST use it

i forgot to mention : you can also tune string 2 down to D so you can listen & learn from it
it gives a high end dominant 7th chord - very useful
you can always bring it back to Eb when needed
kinda like what Jr Brown does..............wink
