Thanks Simon, I was considering a solid tube spacer, as your washer idea would do the same but I'm going down the JD suggested route of a solid base. I'm using a piece of phenolic hardwood plywood, as used by MSA, phenolic just means its made up of a 2 part phenol, we used to call it resorcinal, glue which makes it incredibly solid!

Just an update. I used solid packing under the pickup and, in my opinion, it sounds even better.
If anyone has a Telonics multi, adjustable pickup with allen cap screws, be aware, as I wasn't! don't screw the downward going Allen screws too far, they can push off the bottom plate and bend it away from the pickup if you have springs or foam under the pickup. I had new strings for my birthday so it was the perfect time to fit the packer, clean and oil! Cheers
