Tuning the split

Wed Jul 13, 2016 9:43 am

Hi Folks.

Hopefully you can help me.

I've tuned my new to me GFI Expo with sweetened tuning. RKL and B pedal on the 6th both in tune. Put them together and it's around 45% sharp. How do I go about fixing this?

Thanks in advance...

Peter

Check your rods are going to the correct holes on the changer and the bellcranks

Not sure a rodding chart will be very much help. According to the guys over on the USA forum, the GFI range cannot have tuned splits. :o

I don't know about Expo set up, but on my GFI Ultra there is an additional rod to tune the 6th split.

Hi Peter
I have just checked my GFI and I have the same problem as you, just never noticed it as I don't use that combination much and I haven't had the guitar very long. Might try and put a compensator rod on it like the one mentioned here

Thanks for the info and advice. It's a complicated business! I can't quite believe that the Expo doesn't allow you to tune it properly as a default. I'd better get on with customising it! Thanks again for your expertise,

Peter

I just put the compensator rod on the guitar and I was able to tune the split perfectly :)
Might start using it now! Made me realise though I will need another one to tune my vertical lever properly
Will need to source some ferrules before I do that to connect the rod to my bellcrank

Glad you got it sorted, Roger. I'm a complete novice at this - can you tell me what I need and where to get it from?

Thanks!

Hi Peter,

I could send you a rod with a nylon nut attached, the only thing I'm short of is the brass ferrule that connects the rod to the bellcrank. I have ordered some from ebay but wont know until they arrive that they'll work.

Quite simple once you have the bits....I put the rod through the top hole on the 6th string changer and connected it to the 2nd hole on the bellcrank (hole 1 will work too but my ferrule wouldnt fit).
Activate the knee lever with your hand so it pulls the bellcranks and while in this position tighten up the new rod connection on the bellcrank.

Then just follow the tuning instructions on that pic I attached earlier
