Thanks for all responses so far....some of the springs definitely need looking at...! :D

Will report back, but will most likely be Thursday before I can get some time for 'hands - on'!!

So how have you got on Kev? (and you're not quite alone here in N.Yorks, I'm near Leeming Bar on A1).
Just to elaborate the reason for the pedal height thing - the pedal height needs to be set so that your foot can "hover" over A+B, but can also press either one (inside or outside edge of sole) without fouling the other. You move to get B and C but a similar ergonomic applies. That's why A is higher than B, and C about level with A; in an Emmons setup.
You've had some posts already so I'm assuming it's an all-pull and you've set the "hard" stops as Bob told you. Your 2nd string lower issue - check the stops again, in case the pull rod does not have sufficient travel for that change. And make sure the crank is tight on the cross shaft.
