We hand tightened as much as possible. When I do any repair work I check all screws and snug them as much as possible. Never experimented with any other method.

Well, that's put the cat amongst the pigeons.
If you're tightening screws up on a new guitar there's bound to be a bit of give in the wood in time. However, he says he tightens them up on repairs so they would then stay tight.

There appears to be no definite consensus on this so it's seems it's a case of do you own thing. I'm happy to take Jacks' line myself.

Ken, I wonder if Mike Johnson has any take on this?

He probably does have a view but he is such a busy guy that I am reluctant to bother him. I do have another friend who maintains Mike's p/p guitars for him, and that is Clem Schmitz. Clem is a genius, particularly on push pulls, and I will drop him a line.

Forgive me 'all' but I think the quest here may be for something completely different. (I should also say at this point Matt and I have had numerous dealings in recent years, He's sound and has one sharp ear, seriously musically accomplished!) .... So I have a hunch that Sustain per say is perhaps not his pursuit here....Please jump back in Mr 'Park'

Sustain is the elongation of a note, yes it can be done by means of volume control or the pedal on a piano etc. Hit a sound even a dead sound and you can keep that sound going be electronic means.

I don't actually believe that is what is being sought here. I think what we steel players crave is not 'Sustain' but ............ 'The Halo' ........... Something altogether different.

Pick up an old tuning fork, (I still have one in my case, if all else fails that will always work) Ping it..the note will be clear, ring beautifully and fade with precision! No sustain! Just natural decay!

Pick up a fine crystal glass and ping that! it will also ring and ring and ring! This is what we crave. Some PSGs whether by manufacture, design or accident have..... 'That Halo' or 'Crystal Ring' ....

My advice!!... when you get your hands on one! ......... don't part with it!

I have found this thread interesting from start to finish. I have a bolt on Emmons 68 PP, which sounds great but I struggle to keep in tune, and now I know this is perhaps to be expected from the guitar.

I don't understand the falling out. I have found both Ken and John's contributions to the site invaluable, even if in this case re. scale length John (as he has conceded) was in the wrong.

Ken, I would be interested to see Clem's response, if you are happy to post it here.
