If a string is not returning to the correct rest position you need to incease the return spring pressure. On some guitars there is no adjustment & you have to shorten the springs. However; you shouldn't have to shorten return springs on a Bennet. If my memory serves me right? You just need to back off a couple of allen grub screws in the little brass block ( one for each string) & move it to compress the spring more & then tighten the screws backup when you've reached the nescessary compression.

I guess it's definitely time to change them... apparently, my Bennet spent a few years under a bed and it's been played almost every day for the past 3 months

Just once a month ONLY if you're playing 3 or 4 times in that month. In my case it's change them once a fortnight, and every second gig with my Tele. In the studios it's every three hours with my Martin, Taylor or any acoustic, and definitely new strings for every steel guitar session.
IMHO New strings are the cheapest way to sound good, no stomp box or amplifier setting can simulate the sound of new strings..
AND where do you get the best string deals from ? :guitar: :guitar: :guitar:
Would you drive your car with worn out bald tyres ?

It can be really frustrating when tuning problems occur, but, patience, guidance from fellow steelies and a bit of trial and error usually gets you there in the end. I also think solving these problems does help to better understand the instrument and get more pleasure out of it (although I wouldn't say the same about cars - can't stand looking under the bonnet and have no idea what any of it does - so there goes my two-penn'orth).

I forgot to post that I managed to solve the problem - the nuts were stripped... I unscrewed two of them and little bits fell off. I tried with another two that were in good condition and that did the trick...

Now I need to find new nuts, heeeeelp pleeeease. Where do you buy them?

Again, thanks a lot !!!

Charlie, if it turns out you need new springs contact Ron Bennett, builder of your guitar, he used to be in Bebbington, but believe he has moved up to Elgin in Scotland, perhaps some one can provide Ron's new contact number.

Cheers Malcolm, I've sorted the tuning issues and it seems it's something with the hex nuts. It's not a bad idea to ask him for a new set of springs... thanks
