Sho-Bud Maverick

Anyone know if the original Maverick was made without Knee levers and if so was it possible to add KLs? Also what was the pedal set-up and could it be changed? Thanks in anticipation for any help on this.

Trying to trawl through my memory bank, I am pretty sure that the Mavericks originally came in 3 + 1 format with the lever positioned at RKR. The changer didn't facilitate multi pulls on the same string, so the lever typically would lower string 2 to D or the bottom E string to Eb. When I was a rep for Sho~Bud (London) selling their guitars, I would try to steer potential customers away from the Maverick because of its very limited pull mechanism. However, it was cheap and cheerful at the time and had a half decent tone. The natural wood model looked quite pretty too.

Years ago, the late John Coop in the USA built a replacement changer for the Maverick which allowed a 3 + 4 set up. I never saw a close up of that changer, despite asking John by email if I could take a peek at it. So, it is not beyond the ability of those with a technically adept mind to design a modified changer for the Maverick that would allow for modern pulls to be installed. Thanks for that Ken, due to my advanced senility I didn't even think about the USA forum until after I posted here. There is a reference to a Maverick with no knee levers and a few notes about Coops mechanism but there isn't anything up to date. I've sent a message to Jeff at Show-Pro who I've found to be very helpful in the past. I started with an old Fuzzy from Eric back in the 70s which had 3+1. Changed pedal 3 to lower the Bs to Bb and with the help of an engineer friend added a second K/L. I played that set-up for almost 10 years until I got my first Sho-Bud.

Regarding your Maverick, It has been a while since I saw the underside of one,but I can tell you that the Carter Starter comes with a limited changer.
On the Carter Starter there is a gate on the bottom of the changer, I took a dremmel and I sawed slots in the gate, and my friend Brandon now has a Carter Starter with 3 and 4, basically everything I have on my Mullen.
Perhaps the same could be done to the Maverick, but as I said it has been a while since I saw one, Maybe Ken Byng could comment

The American steel guitar forum has a post in the pedal steel section entitled " Sho-Bud Maverick instruction booklet", posted by Michael lee Allen on the 16th of this month.
This gives all the information required to answer any questions about the Maverick.

Mavericks as with other single finger guitars are built to raise or lower but ideally not both!
Feel free to spend many hours trying to assemble springs to balance Eb to F on the 4th and 8th!
Trust me I should be bald by now!
This guitar was based on a convoluted tuning to achieve the chords but for modern shapes and learning it could be challenging and then when you have learned it you have to do it all over again on today's setup.

So: on a three lever setup:

on a right moving lever lower 4th & 8th [works] ..............Just lost your C pedal change? ...........let's come back to that!
on another right moving lever lower 2nd and 9th [works]
on a left moving lever raise the 7th [works]
to give your C pedal something to do you could raise your 1st! [works]

On a two lever setup lose the 7th raise

So for those B&C pedal changes! Try this on any standard E9th setup

The attached is not tab as you know it but I hope it makes sense!............The last bit means 456 open!

Identical notes are they not???!

It is all about what we are used to and comes back to the age old statement !!

I play it this way because that's the way I learned it when I got it!!

I've just remembered that I have a complete BMI changer system that I'm sure could be retro-fitted to an old Maverick. If I could get one at the right price.

BMI Changer??? Have I missed something here! I must take more time to reply in future!
